LAWRENCE – Three faculty members committed to the growth and success of the University of Kansas research enterprise are joining the Office of Research as associate vice chancellors.

Professors Kathleen Lynne Lane, Erik Lundquist and Belinda Sturm will begin their duties Jan. 1.

As members of the senior leadership team, the trio will help oversee a number of areas that support the KU research mission, including research centers, strategic planning, research development, research administration, research compliance and related topics. Lane, Lundquist and Sturm have served as interim associate vice chancellors for research since summer 2018 and were selected for permanent appointment after an internal search.

“Professors Lane, Lundquist and Sturm are accomplished faculty researchers with active programs of externally sponsored projects who understand the local, regional, national and global issues that impact KU investigators,” said Simon Atkinson, vice chancellor for research. “They’ve been engaged, supportive leaders for the KU research community over the past year and a half, and I look forward to continuing to work with each of them to grow and develop the KU research enterprise.”

Kathleen Lynne Lane is a professor in the Department of Special Education whose research focuses on designing, implementing and evaluating comprehensive, integrated, three-tiered (Ci3T) models to prevent the development of learning and behavior challenges and respond to existing instances. At KU Research, she will continue to support four of KU’s designated research centers and serve as the institutional official for human subjects research.

Erik Lundquist is a professor in the Department of Molecular Biosciences whose research group seeks to understand the basic molecular and genetic mechanisms of nervous system development. At KU Research, he will continue to provide support for two of KU’s designated research centers and all of its core labs. Lundquist will also serve as the institutional official for animal care and use in research.

Belinda Sturm is a professor in the Department of Civil, Environmental & Architectural Engineering whose research group studies the application of biological processes in environmental engineering toward public health protection and sustainability. At KU Research, she will continue to support five of KU’s designated research centers and serve as the institutional official for academic misconduct.

The KU Office of Research facilitates innovation, creative activity, discovery and the application and dissemination of knowledge. To accomplish this mission, KU Research advocates for research, implements research integrity requirements, and, through the KU Center for Research (KUCR), manages the administration of research grants and contracts. KU Research also has oversight of activities related to technology commercialization and business and industry outreach.
