To: Department of Energy PIs and research support staff

As of July 12, the annual progress reporting process for U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science awards will include release of a public progress report to “share the scientific accomplishments, highlight the publications and other products, identify the research participants and partners, and describe the impacts and benefits to the nation.”

The table below from the DOE Office of Science shows the portions of the progress report that will be displayed in the public progress report.

  • The Cover Page will be generated automatically from the submitted progress report but will exclude contact information for the PI and the employer ID number of the awardee institution.

  • The Accomplishments section will now include a new “public response box” with questions to guide development of the report. These questions will be aimed at providing information to the public about what was done and what was learned from the funded project during the reporting period.

  • The Products section will be generated automatically from the data entered into the progress report form to include publications, websites reported as products, and patents reported as granted. It will not include journal articles that have not been published and patents that have not been granted.

  • The Participants section will be generated automatically with no new data entry fields. There will be an aggregate table including the number of personnel and person/months worked on the project, as well as total numbers of participants. Participant names and contact information will not be made public. Partner institutions — including name, city, state and country — will be displayed in the public progress report.

  • Similar to the Accomplishments section, the Impact section will include a “public response box” to guide completion of this portion of the report. These questions should be answered to inform the taxpaying public about how investment in this project benefits the nation.
