Requirements for in-person human subjects research

Dear Human Subjects Research Community,

As we progress through the spring semester, we wanted to send a reminder about requirements for working in person with human subjects.

At this time, the HRPP is reviewing requests for in-person research on a case-by-case basis, using our COVID-19 Risk Matrix (.pdf) as a guide. The complete vaccination status (more than 2 weeks after the second shot) of the research team will be considered in the risk assessment, along with current safety recommendations from the CDC and local health department, and potential participant vulnerability to COVID-19 exposure through the proposed research methods and location.

Please note that departmental approval of a safety plan for reactivation of research in KU facilities does not cover approval for in-person human subjects research. 

Specific approval from the HRPP is required to restart in-person human subjects research. Please see instructions for submitting a request for reactivating in-person research.
