Meet the new grant coordinator managing limited submissions

Jen Arbuthnot

The Office of Research would like to introduce you to Jen Arbuthnot, a new grant coordinator who will manage KU’s limited submissions process. Limited submissions are funding opportunities where the sponsor limits the number of proposals an institution may submit. You may have already received emails from Jen announcing new limited submission funding opportunities.

She would like to highlight some key facts about limited submissions:

  • Jen will announce approximately 80 limited submission funding opportunities each year. Each announcement will follow either the “standard” or “accelerated” process for collecting information from interested applicants.

  • The standard process will initially solicit a notice of intent from interested parties, followed by a request for pre-proposals if we receive more NOI that the number of submissions allowed.

  • The accelerated process will only request submission of a pre-proposal. It will be used for opportunities that have historically required an internal competition, that require a KU-Lawrence and KUMC bi-campus review, or that do not allow sufficient time for the standard process.

  • To submit an NOI, interested applicants will provide their name and email address, a project title, the names and affiliations of known team members to be included in the proposal, and a list of suggested reviewers. Suggested reviewers should be internal to KU, have sufficient expertise to evaluate proposals and, whenever possible, be outside the department of the project team members.

  • A pre-proposal will contain the same information as the NOI, along with a single PDF attachment containing the following items:

    • A 3-page narrative describing the proposed research, including key personnel and partnerships, and addressing any special components requested in the agency’s solicitation and the review criteria outlined in the review rubric provided with the announcement.

    • A CV/biosketch for the PI and senior personnel. Any federally accepted format for the CV/biosketch is fine, but it should be no longer than 5 pages.

If you are interested in applying for a limited funding opportunity but you haven’t seen an announcement, please contact Jen. She will make sure it is in our queue and let you know when the announcement is scheduled.
