Sponsor Website:

Please note for this funding opportunity KU-L and KUMC are considered one organization and only two submissions are allowed.  In order to allow PIs on both campuses the same amount of time to prepare for the internal competition we are requesting a pre-proposal at the same time as the notice of intent form.

The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation is seeking ideas grounded in science that promise to transform activity in an area of interest to the foundation: natural science, environmental conservation and patient experience and care. The Foundation is seeking a combination of demonstrated promise of the individual and a compelling idea in which marked progress toward a defined goal can be measured during the three years of support. The Foundation aims to support ideas at an early stage that could lead to proof-of-concept or advance an existing prototype toward application. Candidates must be within ten years of receiving the terminal degree in their field (e.g., Ph.D. or M.D.) They can be tenure-line faculty, teaching faculty, research scientists, postdocs or other full-time affiliates of the university

Limited Submission Proposals Procedure:
Notice of Intent Procedure:

If you plan to submit a pre-proposal, please Click Here * to submit an NOI by Friday, December 9, 2017.  This information will assist KU Office of Research in organizing the review committee.

The pre-proposal should include:

  • A one-page narrative describing the idea or technology, its importance, stage of invention, current funding, feasibility, and potential impact
  • the targeted focus area:
    • natural science
    • environmental conservation
    • patient care and experience
  • A two-page CV for the PI

Please submit this material electronically to at KU Research, by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, December 15, 2017.

If you would like to suggest internal faculty members whom you believe are especially well qualified to evaluate pre-proposals for this initiative, please send those names to now so that we can begin assembling a committee. We expect the internal review process to take a minimum of 2 weeks to complete. Additional time may be needed for opportunities that span both campuses or when large numbers of pre-proposals are received. Our goal is to provide a thorough review of all pre-proposals while still providing sufficient time for the selected candidates to prepare for the sponsor’s deadline.
