Abstract:

Since 1951, Nobel Laureates in chemistry, physics, and physiology/medicine convene annually in Lindau, Germany, to have open and informal meetings with students and young researchers. In 2018, the meeting will feature recipients of the Nobel Prize in the field of Physiology and Medicine. The Laureates lecture on the topic of their choice in the mornings and participate in less formal, small-group discussions with the students in the afternoons and some evenings. Transportation, lodging and registration expenses are arranged and paid for by the sponsoring agencies. Participants meet for an orientation meeting prior to the start of the Lindau Meeting. A student awardee will be committed to travel from approximately June 24, 2018 until June 29, 2018.  The final dates will be determined at a later date.

Students may be nominated to attend this meeting who:

  • are U.S. citizens currently enrolled at a university as full-time graduate students;
  • have completed by June 2018 at least two academic years of study toward a doctoral degree in physiology/medicine or related disciplines, but not planning a dissertation/thesis defense before January 1, 2019;
  • must be participating in a research project

Mars, Inc. is especially interested in receiving nominations from a diverse group of students, including women, minorities and people with disabilities.

A complete nomination consists of the following documents:

  • a completed nomination form (attached)
  • a strong letter of reference from the nominee’s research advisor and
  • an essay of no more than one page written by the nominee describing why participation in the Lindau meeting is important for the nominee’s graduate education.
